Be the perfect warrior, the perfect child, the perfect student. Kanína, the holder of Orlog, the god of luck, dreads the day she receives his houthflur, markings that contain his power. With a single promise of freedom for her brother, Kristofer, she willingly accepts the role under her abusive god. She only has to obey.

That is, until she is attacked in front of his temple. Only a few feet away, he comes to her aid, giving her markings to protect her. Once she is safe, though, she realizes too late that the houthflur she receives is not of her god Orlog, but rather the markings Leavís Refur, the god of chaos, a forbidden deity who hasn’t been seen in centuries. Now his sole follower, her only option is to flee from her tribe and find refuge in the only place that will protect her, the Centurion Army- a place dedicated to killing gods and protecting Mudthur’s mirror fragments from the Vondur.

Kanína is placed under Eilif, the highest mage of the army and leader of Scouting Regiment I. He works to train the chaos in her blood, understanding her unique powers may be the only ones that could save their province, Thalor. Eilif and her slowly become closer, developing forbidden feelings a houthflur holder can never act on. Kanína finds new purpose among her regiment, and within the army. Despite this, the guilt of leaving Kristopher eats away at her. Was Orlog going to treat him how he treats her? When all seems to be falling apart, she must make a decision: Risk everything she has to save her brother or let go of the past in hopes of a better future.
